Ambassador Kari Kahiluoto

Vietnam is known as a dynamic and fast-developing nation of 90 million inhabitants that has for consecutive years witnessed strong economic growth and also more regional economic integration as a member of ASEAN, the Association of South East Asian Nations. From visitors and guests perspective, Vietnam is a safe and stable nation where everyone can feel welcome.

In Vietnam Finland is considered to be an old friend, but the relationship between Finland and Vietnam is influenced by both continuity and change. We are known for our long-term commitment to the development of Vietnam and today we have been especially acknowledged as a country of high-level and equal education, environmentally sustainable solutions and as a leader in innovation.

The major element of change between our relations is the closure of the programmatic bilateral development (ODA) cooperation relationship between Finland and Vietnam in 2018. Future relations will be defined on a clearly equal and commercially mutually beneficial basis.  As a member nation of the European Union, Finland is looking forward to the entry into force of the Vietnam – EU Free Trade Agreement, which we trust will open new possibilities for mutual trade and investments.

Vietnam’s strong economic performance and growth and modernization lay a strong foundation for a future Finnish footprint.  Both Finland and Vietnam owe their prosperity to free trade and a stable and transparent, functioning international trading environment.

As a diplomat I have learned to search for similarities and common ground.  Even a short stay in Vietnam highlights the similarities between our two countries. We are citizens of the same globalized village. Our fundamental values and objectives are the same. We cherish education as the best guarantee of durable progress. Family, homestead, self-respect and optimism in the search for a better future unite us. Protection of the environment and respect of the beauty of nature are important for both the Vietnamese and Finnish people. We also share a common view of history – we have learned to find strength and vision from our historical heritage.

The Embassy of Finland is an active participant in EU cooperation in Vietnam and supports Finnish society in building links and connections with Vietnam. Within its resources the Embassy also represents Finland and Finnish interests in the Lao Peoples Republic.
