Media

In an increasingly “wired” world, Finland is keeping pace quite handily with their abundant and varied media outlets. Due to a unique mixture of public and private financing - the two largest media groups are privately owned, the third one is financed by the state - Finns are increasingly pampered with a wealth of choices.

Staying abundantly in tune

The diversified model of incorporating both public and private funds has had quite an impressive effect. In Finland you can consume:

  • 300 popular magazines
  • 2,000 professional magazines
  • 220 newspapers
  • Tens of commercial radio stations
  • Three national public service radio channels in Finnish
  • Two national public service radio channels in Swedish
  • A radio network in the Sámi language
  • Three digital radio channels
  • Four national TV channels
  • 12 feature films each year
  • 13,000 book titles annually
  • 12 million records sold each year

Although media is ripe for consumption, Finns strongly believe that diversity in media must be combined with freedom and integrity. According to a survey conducted by “Reporters without Borders,” Finland is one of the leading countries when freedom of the press is measured.

Finland is also no exception when it comes to electronic media. Although this outlet has gained massive popularity, Finns still spend a considerable amount of time reading. According to a recent Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development survey, 15-year-old Finns have the best literary skills in the world.
